The club was founded in 1962 by members of Wheatley Hills School on the east side of Doncaster. Although the club is still relatively young, it has progressed, significantly, from its early days as an ‘Old Boys’ side, winning Cup & League honours. The club has also secured its own ground, purchasing the seven acre site with help from The RFU and Sports Council. We purchased the office buildings next to the pitch. Work started to convert the building into what is now our club house and changing rooms.
Over the years the club has produced many players who have gained honours at County, Divisional and National Colts level. This is a credit to those setting up the Colts, sincere their formation in 1979. A great number have progressed to play in the First XV. We have had players join and play for teams in the National Leagues, most of who return to Wheatley Hills. In 2002 we received a grand from the CRT, of £135,000 that saw the facilities improve again. As part of our community programme we have a number of local and senior football clubs train at Brunel Road. Looking forward to the future, the club is looking to challenge and move back into Yorkshire One and build on the strong coaching foundation implemented by Alan & Dave for 2008/09. Our long term strategy is to strengthen the squad by developing good quality youth players. Although players with ability will still be targets for affluent clubs, we aim to create a stable environment in which the young players can reach their full potential, whilst enjoying the atmosphere and camaraderie that has long been a traditional part of our game. An aspect the club believes has been missing following the introduction of professionalism.
